Can you tell me what kind of bug this is. Ive never seen one before. Its dead and i picked it up and put it in a jar. Im in Canada (Saskatchewan) to be exact. It somewhat looks like a moth but has really big *mandibles*.
Its creepy, but i had to figure out what it was before i toss it. Thanks xx-“

This is North America’s largest true bug- the Giant Water Bug aka Toe Biter. Those mandibles are actually modified legs it uses to catch prey like small fish or tadpoles. They are harmless but can deliver a painful bite. They are often consumed raw in Thailand and considered quite the delicacy. (no thanks :) ) They can also fly and sometimes are attracted to lights at night, earning them the additional name of Electric Bug.

Maybe I woulnt move to Canada after all. I like bugs but maybe just in photographs I don’t want this chap biting my toes off.
